When I was a young teenager living out in the country in Australia, every month a glossy Sportsgirl catalogue would arrive in the letterbox and I’d sit on my bed pouring over the pages, dreaming about how I could be the girls in the catalogues. I especially remember the model Erica Baxter (who is now Mrs James Packer) and the image of her jumping on the beach looking so effortlessly cool and sporty, which has stuck with me all this time.
One year for christmas I received a signature striped Sportsgirl towel, and although we lived no where near a beach, I would lay it out in the garden, throw on a pair of sunglasses and dream I was lying on Bondi beach or somewhere in the French Riviera.
So when I received an email recently from the team at Sportsgirl asking me if I would cover my journey through NY fashion week for them, I remembered the girl who would pour over those pages dreaming she could dive in… and it made me really smile… I of course jumped at the chance!

VOGUE AUSTRALIA | June 2011 | my 7 page story!
When Vogue Australia’s Editor and Fashion Director, Kirstie Clements and Naomi Smith, casually contacted me during Paris Fashion week to meet up again, I never dreamed a 7 page story in Vogue would eventuate!!
Even after shooting images for a magazine, you never really knows the size of the image published or where the images may end up in magazine (something that is really important!) or even if they will make the cut. So when I was sitting front row of Australian Fashion week with the whole Vogue team, thinking that it couldn’t really get much better than this, the June issue landed in my lap! I didn’t have time to flick through it and waited until a quick stop off back to the hotel, with my taxi waiting downstairs…
I started flicking through the pageS whilst trying madly to change outfits, my heart sinking just a little, as I flipped almost all the way through to no avail. I finally reached the main fashion section with a huge lump in my throat with fear – every photographers nightmare – that my images got dropped – as there was no way they would be in main fashion.
…so to my UTTER AMAZEMENT there were my images (all 7 PAGES of them) IN THE MAIN FASHION SECTION!
I literally nearly had a heart attack, then jumped A LOT on the big hotel bed, did a girly squeal (a la a 16 yr old girl meeting Justin Bieber) and raced back down to the taxi apologizing and attempting to explain to the driver why today had just turned into the best day ever to which he replied, “that’s nice honey, but it’s going to be $60 bucks for the waiting time.”
Ahhh well… couldn’t all be a fairy tale.
